Inquest into the Death of Timothy Elliott Announced

Dr. David Cameron, Regional Supervising Coroner for Inquests, announced today that an inquest will be held into the death of Timothy Elliott.

Mr. Elliott, 42, died on September 12, 2015, while in custody at the Thunder Bay District Jail. An inquest is mandatory under the Coroners Act.

The inquest will examine the circumstances surrounding Mr. Elliott’s death. The jury may make recommendations aimed at preventing further deaths.

The inquest is expected to last five days and hear from approximately eight witnesses.

The inquest will start at 9 a.m. on Monday, September 28, 2020, at the Main Boardroom,189 Red River Rd., Thunder Bay. Dr. Michael Wilson will preside as inquest coroner and Rob Kozak will be counsel to the coroner.

The Main Boardroom will remain closed to visitors for health and safety reasons related to the COVID-19 pandemic. The inquest will be conducted by video conference. Members of the public who wish to view the proceedings can do so live.
