FORT FRANCES – Fort Frances OPP report that on 20 July 2020, officers were alerted to a suspicious person sitting inside a vehicle outside a Fort Frances residential area. When officers arrived, they located three females sitting inside an idling vehicle. Police investigation revealed the driver had just self-administered an illegal substance within minutes of police arrival causing her to slump over in her driver’s seat.
The driver, Kayla COPENACE, 32 years of Mishkosiminiziibiing (Big Grassy) First Nation was arrested and charged with Impaired Operation of a Motor Vehicle contrary to section 320.14(1)a of the Criminal Code of Canada and Possession of a Controlled Substance (Opioid) contrary to Section 4(1) of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act. The vehicle was impounded. COPENACE is scheduled to appear in Fort Frances Ontario Court of Justice on 17 August 2020 at 09:30 am.
