THUNDER BAY – The Municipal Emergency Control Group (MECG) met today with community partners as part of its ongoing management of the COVID-19 situation and discussed the importance of residents following the full range of measures to protect against the spread of the virus.
Starting Friday, July 24, 2020 at 12:01 am, masks or face coverings are required in all enclosed public spaces, including on Thunder Bay Transit. “Thank you to Dr. DeMille for the decision to require masks inside public spaces,” said Mayor Bill Mauro. “Wearing a mask or face covering inside public spaces is another contribution we can all make to protect our community against the spread of COVID-19.”
“The Thunder Bay District Health Unit area is in a good position as we enter stage 3, however, we’re not out of the woods yet – we must all do our part to keep our community safe and keep the virus at bay,” said Dr. Janet DeMille, Thunder Bay Medical Officer of Health. “We must maintain our vigilance on all the measures – observing physical distancing, frequent hand washing, social gathering limits, and staying home if you have any symptoms. Masks are an additional layer of protection.”

The partners expressed appreciation for the Health Unit’s support through reopening. Those in attendance represented the City of Thunder Bay, Thunder Bay Police Service, Thunder Bay Fire Rescue, Superior North EMS, Tbaytel, Thunder Bay Airport, Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre, Thunder Bay District Health Unit, District of Thunder Bay Social Services Administration Board, Aurora Borealis Catholic District School Board Lakehead Public Schools, and the Catholic District School Board.
The MECG will meet twice in August and the focus is turning to planning for the fall.
