OPP Charge Thunder Bay Man with Stunt Driving

THUNDER BAY – On July 18, 2020, at approximately 5:30 pm officers of the Ignace Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle that was traveling 50 km/hr over the posted speed limit.

Ignace OPP officers initiated the stop on Hwy 17, Joynt Township, just East of Upsala while concluding another investigation.  As a result of the investigation John JOHNSTON (28 years old) of Thunder Bay, ON has been charged with:

  • Operation while impaired contrary to Section 320.14(1)(a) of the Criminal Code
  • Having a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of 80 mg of alcohol in 100 ml of blood contrary to Section 320.14(1)(b) of the Criminal Code.
  • Mischief under $5000 contrary to Section 430(4) of the Criminal Code.
  • Race a motor vehicle – stunt driving contrary to Section 172(1) of the Highway Traffic Act.

The vehicle was impounded by the police. The accused is scheduled to attend in Provincial court on October 13, 2020, to answer to the charges.

OPP officers remain diligent with their focus on impaired drivers by conducting traffic enforcement, patrols, and Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere (RIDE) checks stops in various random locations every day across the Districts. If you have been consuming intoxicating substances, do not get behind the wheel of any vehicle.
