Transportation Safety Board to Investigate Collision Between Alanis and Florence Spirit

OTTAWA – The Transportation Safety Board of Canada (TSB) is deploying a team of investigators to the site of a collision between the vessels ALANIS and FLORENCE SPIRIT that occurred on July 11, 2020, in the Welland Canal, Ontario. The TSB will gather information and assess the occurrence.

The two ships, the Alanis and the Florence Spirit grazed sides in the incident which was recorded on video by Jeremy Barton and posted to social media. A spokesperson for the St. Lawrence Seaway Management Corporation stated that there were no injuries and fortunately no cargo was spilled as a result of the collision The Welland Canal remains open and traffic on the canal was uninterrupted by the collision.

The TSB is an independent agency that investigates air, marine, pipeline, and rail transportation occurrences. Its sole aim is the advancement of transportation safety. It is not the function of the Board to assign fault or determine civil or criminal liability.
