UPDATE: Explosion and Fire at Richardson Elevator

THUNDER BAY – NEWS – Thunder Bay Fire Rescue were called to an explosion and fire at Richardson’s Terminals at 1:00 PM on Sunday, June 14, 2020. The explosion and fire occurred on the roof of the pellet plant.

The first arriving units reported heavy black smoke and fire coming from the roof of the structure.

A second alarm was requested and five pumpers, two aerial ladders, and a Platoon chief responded.

Firefighters wearing self-contained breathing made their way to the roof of the structure and used ropes to hoist fire hoses to the top of the roof as well as using fire equipment on site.

The fire was contained to a dust filtration system that was equipped with explosion doors that would open during an event like this. The explosion system control the fire and damage was contained to the filtration system and some piping.

The cause of the explosion is unknown at this time and there were no injuries reported.
