THUNDER BAY – The City of Thunder Bay won’t comment until later today on layoffs of city staff. Last night, Norm Gale the City of Thunder Bay Manager said, “We will have more to say tomorrow”.

CUPE 87 says that extensive layoff notices are going out, and right now the situation is not only confusing but very stressful for city workers and their families.

By contrast in other cities, including Toronto layoffs of civic employees are not on the radar yet. “Right now, the City of Toronto is singularly focussed on protecting the health and safety of Torontonians and its employees while delivering essential and critical services to our city as we work to flatten the curve of COVID-19. As this situation is rapidly evolving and uncertain in duration, it would be imprudent to speculate on potential layoffs at this time,” says Toronto’s manager of Corporate Communications Beth Waldman.

Calgary is taking a similar approach to Toronto at this time.
