THUNDER BAY – The union representing Ontario’s French-language teachers (AEFO) recently announced its next phase of pressure tactics and issued a strike notice for Thursday, February 13, 2020.

As a result, our schools will be closed on that day as we will not be able to ensure the safety and well-being of our students. Unless an agreement is reached, classes and school transportation will be canceled for the day of February 13th for the following schools:

  • ÉSC de La Vérendrye, Thunder Bay
  • École catholique Franco-Supérieur, Thunder Bay
  • École catholique de l’Enfant-Jésus, Dryden
  • École catholique des Étoiles-du-Nord, Red Lake

  • École catholique Val-des-Bois, Marathon
  • École Immaculée-Conception, Ignace
  • École Notre-Dame-de-Fatima, Longlac
  • École St-Joseph, Geraldton

Parents are strongly encouraged to make alternate arrangements for child-care on February 13th. Daycares located within our schools will remain open. AEFO also indicates that the one-day strikes (school closures) will occur weekly.

Statement from Minister of Education

Stephen Lecce, Minister of Education, issued the following statement in response to continued escalation by the Association des enseignantes et des enseignants franco-ontariens (AEFO) and the Ontario Secondary School Teachers’ Federation (OSSTF):

“Continued escalation of job action by the teachers’ unions has gone on far too long. Students across the province are being hurt by the withdrawal of services and loss of classroom time.

Parents expect all parties to meet at the negotiating table and have meaningful, student-centric discussions. I call on union leadership to continue to work with us, in good-faith, to end these strikes, and focus on reaching a deal that keeps our students in the classroom where they belong.”

The Keewatin Patricia District School Board (KPDSB) and Conseil scolaire de district catholique des Aurores boréales (CSDCAB) have advised of job action and school closures next week if provincial agreements are not reached with the Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario (ETFO) and Association des enseignantes et des enseignants franco-ontariens (AEFO). Please check your board and school websites for further details and updated notices.

  • Tuesday, February 11 – All KPDSB elementary schools (JK to Grade 8) will be closed to students as a result of ETFO job action.
  • Thursday, February 13 – All KPDSB elementary schools (JK to Grade 8) will be closed to students as a result of ETFO job action & all CSDCAB schools will be closed to students as a result of AEFO job action.

When schools are closed to students, bus service to these schools will be CANCELLED for the day.  Bus service to all other schools will operate as scheduled, and regular service will resume when schools reopen.
