OTTAWA – Prime Minister Trudeau addressed the media at a press conference in Ottawa this afternoon. The Prime Minister stated that there is intelligence from allies and Canadian intelligence that demonstrates that the jetliner was brought down by an Iranian missile.

The Prime Minister stated, “I want answers”.

The PM says he wants Canadian officials engaged in the investigation, but at this time despite seeking that confirmation from the Iranian Foreign Minister there is no action on that at this time.

At this time Iran is keeping the plane’s “black boxes” in Iran, but has told the Ukrainian government that they will allow their officials to have access to those data files.

The Prime Minister discussed the ongoing investigation into the crash of a Ukraine International Airlines passenger aircraft in Tehran, Iran.

During questions from the media, the Prime Minister said that it is possible the apparent missile strike could have been accidental. The MP is saying that this is why a full and open and transparent investigation into the tragedy is required.

Sixty-three Canadians were among the 176 people killed in the crash.

Earlier today there was wide-spread and growing speculation that the aircraft was shot down according to many sources. This includes President Donald Trump who told reporters, he suspects the crash was not due to mechanical issues, and that “somebody could have made a mistake on the other side.” Asked during a White House event what he thought happened to the plane, Trump said, “Well, I have my suspicions.”

The Prime Minister, when asked what responsibility the United States has in this tragedy he deferred saying that it needs a full and transparent investigation and the words of President Trump stand on their own.

Canada does not currently have formal diplomatic relations with Iran.
