EDINA, MN — The Gridlink Atom A Queens are coming home with some ‘delicious’ championship gold from the Cake Eater Classic in Edina, Minnesota in a thrilling final game.
The Queens went 2-0-1 in the round-robin and narrowly edged out host team Edina in a tertiary tie-breaker (least goals allowed) to earn their birth in the Championship game against Osseo-Maple Grove (OMG).
Queen’s goalie Norah Traer played the role of game-stealer, holding OMG to a single goal through regulation while being outshot 17-6. Morgan Barenz tied the game in the second period for the Queens with a top corner snipe after a play set up by Shayla Stokaluk.
With overtime not solving anything, the game went to a 3-player shootout. After a scoreless first round, Morgan Barenz once again sniped on the OMG goalie to put her side up 1-0. The second OMG shooter hit the crossbar on her chance, leading to Vienna Minnella opting for the deke, sliding the puck past the goalie and sealing the deal for the Queens.
