THUNDER BAY – SPORTS – The Lakehead Thunderwolves women’s basketball team kicked off Homecoming week with a game against the University of Manitoba Bisons.
The Bisons’ got off to a fast start but the Thunderwolves got off the mark in a hurry peppering the basket with shots but in the early going missed a few of those giving an early lead to the Bisons.
The fast-paced game saw the U of M take a slow but steady lead.
Working hard and making a number of three-pointers for the Wolves, #8 Nikki Viagan helped keep the team close and by the 6:40 minute of the 3rd quarter, The Wolves took their first lead of the game.
The Bisons were up 61-54 after three quarters.
The women did not falter and through steady and mature play the young team battled to take the lead.
The game got really tight – with 3:00 left the Wolves were up by four points.
However, a little sloppy ball play gave the Bison’s a three-point shot with 32.9 seconds left to tie the game at 79 all.
The Wolves showed a lot of game maturity and despite a few errors kept their composure.
The team was rewarded.
Nikki Viagan put the game out of reach with a three-point shot to make it an opening night win for the Wolves.
Final Score – Thunderwolves 82 and the Bisons 78
#8 Nikki Viagan lead the way on the court racking up a solid 31 points. That included the winning basket with 7.5 seconds left on the clock.
For the Bisons #8 led the team with 18 points.
The teams have a rematch on Friday at 2:00 PM.
