THUNDER BAY – BUSINESS – Delegates for the Thunder Bay Chamber of Commerce have recently returned from successful meetings at the Canadian Chamber of Commerce (CCC) in Saint John, NB.
A key focus of the conference was the debate of 76 resolutions on a broad range of issues including taxation, immigration, natural resources, international trade, and transportation policies. Approved policies become official Canadian Chamber positions and will form the CCC’s advocacy activities with the new Federal Government. The Thunder Bay Chamber delegates were successful in garnering national support for two local resolutions:
- highlighting the need for federal infrastructure investment in mining projects such as the Ring of Fire; and,
- proposing numerous changes to flight school requirements to assist in addressing Canada’s pilot shortage.
Thunder Bay co-sponsored numerous additional resolutions of local relevance that gained national support, including:
- enhance tariff claims processes to ensure timely rebates;
- support the forest industry by offering loan guarantees, expediting WTO appeals and negotiating a favourable, new Softwood Lumber Agreement;
- align the Species at Risk Act to respond to regional biodiversity; and,
- make the Ring of Fire a nationally significant initiative
