THUNDER BAY – Community Submission – ON SEPT. 20TH, Thunder Bay will join dozens of countries, thousands of cities and millions of people who are taking to the streets in a climate strike. We are asking all of the unions to spread this information throughout your membership and encourage your brothers and sisters to take part in this global strike.

Join us outside Patty Hajdu’s office (705 Red River Rd) at 12 pm as we unite behind the science and demand that our local, provincial and federal governments take bold climate action. This is an all-ages, family-friendly event.

KEY DEMANDS

  • Governments, tell the truth about the climate crisis. We must leave remaining stocks of fossil fuels in the ground.
  • Governments, act like there’s a climate crisis. We must quickly implement massive energy efficiency and conservation practices, and replace fossil fuels with low carbon renewables, and cleaner energy sources if they are safe for people and the environment.
  • Governments, pay attention to climate science. We must protect and restore Earth‘s ecosystems in tandem with reducing greenhouse gas emissions if we are to continue to support life on this planet.
  • Governments, seek a path forward based on environmental and social justice. We must swiftly eliminate subsidies to fossil fuel corporations and use effective and fair carbon pricing to restrain the use of fossil fuels. Our goals need to shift from GDP growth and the pursuit of affluence toward supporting ecosystem and human wellbeing by prioritizing basic needs and reducing inequality.
