Large Pleasure Craft Hits Break wall – Six Injured

THUNDER BAY –  Thunder Bay Fire and Rescue received an alarm this Thursday evening at 11:11 pm EDT of a report that a large pleasure boat that had hit the break wall in the harbour across from Marina Park. Two Pumpers, a Platoon chief, a zodiac and Harbour Rescue 1 responded.

The Coast guard were first on scene followed by the two fire rescue boats.  Responding units found 6 injured people on board the stricken boat.

Three of the patients were brought to shore on harbor rescue 1 followed by the less injured in the coast guard boat.

Six ambulances were on scene with Paramedics taking over patient care upon arrival back at the landing.

Thunder Bay Police report all these individuals were transported to the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre. One of the parties sustained life threatening injuries and is currently in serious condition.

Alcohol is a suspected factor in the collision. The investigation continues.

The public is asked to report any information regarding this collision to the Thunder Bay Police Service Traffic Unit at 807-684-1200.

The Thunder Bay Police Service regularly partners with other agencies and conducts patrols on the waterways in and around Thunder Bay looking for boaters who have been drinking alcohol. Impaired driving is an offence in any motor vehicle. The penalties for operating while impaired are the same for a boat as they are for a passenger vehicle.

Please don’t drink then drive any motor vehicle.

Thunder Bay Police are continuing their investigation.
