PIKANGIKUM – Canadian Rangers from Canadian Army and CC-130J Hercules aircrew from Royal Canadian Air Force are working hard to support the Pikangikum First Nation community in an ordered evacuation today.

Yesterday, forty-seven residents were airlifted from the community and the military worked with local authorities to assist with planning, registration and evacuation tasks. More flights are scheduled for today.

Smokey conditions restricted the ability of aircraft yesterday.

Pikangikum Community Evacuation underway.

Ontario Minister Greg Rickford states, “Emergency response personnel are working closely with the OPP, community leaders & other agencies to fight the fires in Northwestern Ontario affecting multiple First Nation communities. We will continue to monitor the situation & ensure residents can evacuate safely.”
