FORT FRANCES – On May 5, 2019, at approximately 9:30 pm, a member of the Treaty Three Police Service contacted the Thunder Bay Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Communication Centre to advise that they had an impaired driver pulled over in the Town of Fort Frances, initially for a traffic violation. Members of the Rainy River District OPP attended the location of the vehicle stop at Colonization Road East at Williams Avenue and commenced an investigation. Officers spoke with the driver and determined that he had alcohol in his body. He was taken into OPP custody and transported to the detachment, where he underwent more tests.
As a result of the investigation, Manpreet MATHARU, 23 years of age, of Fort Frances was charged with the following offences:
- Operation while Impaired – alcohol, contrary to section 320.14(1)(a) of the Criminal Code,
- Operation while Impaired – blood alcohol concentration over 80 Milligrams contrary to section 320.14(1)(b) of the Criminal Code,
- Disobey Stop Sign contrary to section 136(1)(a) of the Highway Traffic Act,
- Novice Driver – Blood Alcohol Concentration above Zero contrary to section 44.1(3) of the Highway Traffic Act.
The accused was released on a Promise to Appear and is scheduled to attend court at the Fort Frances Ontario Court of Justice on June 10, 2019. None of the charges have been proven in court.
