THUNDER BAY – Police are continuing an investigation into an accident overnight.
Thunder Bay Police Service officers are investigating a single-vehicle collision that occurred around 11 pm on Thursday, April 25 at the corner of Red River Road and Waverly Street.
Responding officers arrived to find a vehicle engulfed in flames on a grassy area about 10 feet away from the curb. Thunder Bay Fire Rescue firefighters had also arrived on the scene to deal with the fire.
After speaking with witnesses in the area police learned the vehicle was observed travelling southbound on Red River Road near the intersection of High Street at a high rate of speed just before the collision.
Reportedly a male exited the vehicle and fled, but returned to retrieve items from the vehicle before fleeing again.
Firefighters observed the vehicle to be resting on top of an electrical box with exposed wires underneath, which required officials from Thunder Bay Hydro to attend the scene.
Hydro crews were able to address the safety issues by 3:30 am, at which point the vehicle was towed from the scene.
The investigation is ongoing.
