THUNDER BAY – On the afternoon of Monday, April 15, in response to a 911 call, Thunder Bay Fire Rescue responded to a structural fire at a residence in the 200 block of Banning Street.
Soon after leaving the fire station, the responding District-Chief observed heavy black smoke in the area and called for a second alarm. On arrival, firefighters discovered a car completely enveloped with fire. The flames were extending to a garage directly behind the car, which was beginning to burn. The fire also threatened a house on the property.
Firefighters wearing self-contained breathing apparatus deployed two handheld hose lines to apply water to the car and the garage immediately. Simultaneously, firefighters placed a high-volume supply hose to the nearest fire hydrant to establish a continuous, stable water supply.
The fire was controlled within minutes and the house was successfully protected from fire damage. The car in the driveway and the exterior of the roof and walls of the garage were extensively damaged, but a car inside the garage was saved.
Rapid notification to the fire department by a 911 call, along with a fast response and quick action saved the nearby home from harm.
