THUNDER BAY – SPORTS – Freshman Tomas Soustal (Sternberk, Czech Republic) received a major award at the Lakehead University Athletics Awards Ceremony held on Saturday.
Soustal was named the Lakehead University Male Freshman Athlete of the Year after an impressive rookie season.
In the individual team awards for hockey, Soustal was also tabbed as the top freshman. “Tomas has the opportunity to be a top player in the OUA if he continues to progress like he did this year,” head coach Andrew Wilkins said.
Senior Callum Fryer (Oakville, ON) was selected as the team’s best defensive player and sophomore Daniel Del Paggio (Thunder Bay, ON) was the best offensive player.
A pair of fifth-year seniors took home the other two awards. Brennen Dubchak (Kenora, ON) got the nod for possessing the best work ethic for the second year in a row, and Dylan Butler (Thunder Bay, ON) was chosen as the Wolves’ most valuable player.
