RED LAKE – NEWS – On March 2, 2019, at approximately 12:15 pm, officers from the Red Lake Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) received a report of an impaired driver in the Municipality of Red Lake. Officers conducted patrols of the area and located the vehicle travelling westbound on Highway 618.
A traffic stop was conducted and the driver of the vehicle spoken to. The officer made a demand for a breath sample and the driver subsequently failed.
The driver was arrested for Operating a Motor Vehicle with Over 80 mg of alcohol in 100 ml of blood and returned to the detachment for further tests. As a result of the investigation, Caylynn Suggashie, 26, of Pikangikum, was charged with Over 80 contrary to Section 320.14(1)(b) of the Criminal Code and released by way of a Promise to Appear in Red Lake court on April 11 at 9 am to answer to the charges.
The next day, March 3 at approximately 9:30 pm, police received a report of a male driver in Balmertown suspected to be impaired by alcohol. Officers attended and located a vehicle matching the description and conducted a traffic stop. The driver was spoken to and the officer placed the driver under arrest for Impaired Operation of a Motor Vehicle. Once at detachment for further tests, the male driver refused to provide a breath sample as requested by police. As a result of the investigation, Matthew Bennett, 37, of Balmertown, was charged with Impaired Operation of a Motor Vehicle contrary to Section 320.14(1)(b) and Fail to Comply with Demand contrary to Section 320.15(a) both of the Criminal Code. He was released by way of a Promise to Appear in Red Lake court on April 11 to answer to the charges.
Motorists who drive impaired by alcohol or drugs are subject to drivers licence suspensions, fines, vehicle impoundments, criminal records and increased insurance costs. Please drive responsibly and don’t drink and drive.
