Shuniah – NEWS – At approximately 5:30 pm on Monday, February 25, 2019, Shuniah Fire & Emergency Services (SFES) responded to reports of a fully involved structure fire in the 2400 block of Lakeshore Drive in the Municipality of Shuniah.

First arriving crews reported a fully involved garage fire that had also spread to an attached sauna. Firefighters worked through cold conditions to bring the fire under control before 7:00 pm. The fire was declared extinguished at approximately 7:30 pm. There were no injuries to report and the cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Sixteen SFES firefighters in seven fire apparatus, Superior North EMS, and Ontario Provincial Police responded to the call. All SFES units were back in service by 10:30 pm.

SFES would like to remind the public to always follow the manufacturer’s recommendations when using, installing, and caring for portable heaters and to ensure sufficient clearances are maintained between portable heaters and any combustible materials.
