COOK COUNTY – At 2:42 pm this afternoon, the Grand Marais Fire Department and Cook County Sheriff’s Office responded a structure fire involving a garage on W 3rd Street in Grand Marias. The fire was reported by a neighbor located behind the property on W 2nd Street.
Grand Marais VFD arrived at the garage fully engulfed in flame and threatening the house and vehicle in close proximity. Firefighters entered the home and were able to locate and safely evacuate homeowner Carol Bosman with successful reentry to rescue pets – a dog, cat and rabbit.
Grand Marais Public Utilities Commission was dispatched by 911 to shut down the power and manage electrical risk. Maple Hill Fire Department was called for mutual aid for additional coverage but was later cancelled at Incident Commander request. 3rd Street and 1st Avenue W were blocked off to secure the perimeter of the scene.
At 3:33 pm, the fire was reported out and crews were in mop-up mode. The City of Grand Marais and Cook County Highway Department crews were dispatched to assist with street clean-up and safety measures as fire suppression efforts left significant water and debris in the street. Crews were able to restore the scene.
The cause of the fire is under investigation. No injuries were sustained.
