THUNDER BAY – SPORTS – The Superior International Junior Hockey League announced Monday that Thief River Falls Norskies goalkeeper Bailey Schmitz has been named its Play It Again Sports Player of the Week for the period concluding Feb. 17.
In a pair of starts in the time frame, against the two teams closest to Thief River Falls in the league standings, Schmitz won both of them finishing the week with a 1.50 goals-against average and a .955 save percentage.
Thursday night saw the 20-year-old Red Lake Falls, Minn., product handle 37 of the 39 attempts he faced in a 3-2 home triumph over Dryden.
Schmitz then made 27 more stops in a 3-1 road win at Red Lake Sunday evening.
With 57 career appearances in the SIJHL, the Norskies netminder sports a solid 37-12-4-3 overall record with a 2.65 GAA and a .920 save mark, along with seven shutouts.
Also earning consideration for player of the week honours was Jacob Brown, (F) Thunder Bay North Stars; Eric Stout, (F) Dryden GM Ice Dogs; Michael Di Lullo, (F) Red Lake Miners; Garrett Wojcicki, (F) Minnesota Iron Rangers and Jakob Ruck, (F) Fort Frances Lakers.
