OTTAWA – The resignation of Gerald Butts as Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s principle secretary has Ottawa rushing to try to figure out what happened.
Andrew Scheer, Leader of Canada’s Conservatives and the Official Opposition, issued the following statement:
“The sudden resignation of Justin Trudeau’s closest political advisor is the clearest indication yet that there is much more to the SNC-Lavalin Affair than the Prime Minister has so far admitted.
“It is now more important than ever before that Mr. Trudeau waive solicitor-client privilege so Jody Wilson-Raybould can tell her side of the story to Canadians. The resignation of Gerald Butts, the Prime Minister’s longest-serving and most-trusted aide, does not in any way settle this matter. In fact, it presents even more questions that must be answered.
“The events of the last several days and the ensuing chaos that has engulfed the government are signs that the Prime Minister is desperate to keep the truth hidden. Justin Trudeau must stop hiding behind other people and end the cover-up he and his office have engineered since these allegations surfaced.
“Conservatives on the Justice Committee will continue to demand a thorough and public investigation and all other options remain on the table. Canadians deserve answers and I will continue to do everything in my power to get them.”
