Thunder Bay Transit Driver Assault on May Street

THUNDER BAY – NEWS – A Thunder Bay Transit driver was assaulted on Monday night.

An observant Thunder Bay Police Service officer was in the area of City Hall just before 10 pm on Monday, Jan. 28 when the officer saw an assault in progress.

Thunder Bay Police report that the bus driver was walking northbound on May Street around this time when he was verbally accosted and then assaulted by a male. A female approached the accused immediately and pulled him away from the victim, at which point the accused attempted to flee the area on foot.

The TBPS officer spotted the suspect heading eastbound on Donald Street and caught up with him as he ran northbound down a back alley in the 100 block of May Street.

The officer placed the man under arrest. The suspect attempted to resist, but after a brief struggle, the officer was able to take the individual into custody about five minutes following the initial assault.

Earl Felton SAKANEE, 31, is charged with Assault and Resist Peace Officer. SAKANNE was arrested in 2014 as part of a homicide investigation. He was convicted and served a sentence of five years for that crime.

He appeared in court Tuesday morning and was remanded into custody with a future date.
