TIMMINS – The car is loaded and I’m headed back to Ottawa for this final session of Parliament. Here are some of the latest files I’m working on.
CRISIS IN CAT LAKE
We are now two weeks into the horrific housing crisis at Cat Lake reserve in Northwestern Ontario and Minister Seamus O’Regan continues to stall. He says he will send some regional bureaucrats to a meeting next week. This isn’t good enough. There is an urgency for action and people are at risk. I will be putting pressure on Minister O’Regan to take the well-being of Indigenous people seriously.
DIGITAL RIGHTS-CITIZEN RIGHT
This past month I was recognized by the New York Times for my work in holding Facebook to account. The potential manipulation of this platform by right-wing groups has been proven time and time again in elections around the world. I am pushing Parliament to undertake a study of the protection of citizen rights in a world increasingly controlled by the large data-opolies. You can read the full article here.
“Charlie Angus is the rare politician who understands that this is the biggest, most consequential project the government has ever done and it has enormous implications for Canada’s prosperity, our rights and our democracy.” – Jim Balsillie, Founder of Blackberry
SWEETHEART DEAL IN TORONTO
It seems I have been ruffling some feathers by asking questions about how Google was given control of prime waterfront real estate to establish a “smart city” project. Major alarm bells are being sounded by citizen activists, privacy experts and Canadian innovators. This deal has been driven by the backroom dealings of lobbyists and the Trudeau government. I will continue to push for accountability. Click here to read more.
I am looking forward to being back in Ottawa with my NDP colleagues. We need to be firing on all cylinders to make parliament more accountable to Canadians.
