THUNDER BAY – SPORTS – Lakehead’s women’s basketball team lost their first home game of the season on Saturday night, losing to the Windsor Lancers by a score of 72-58. Lakehead moves to 12-2 with the loss.
“We had a decent start tonight, but once Windsor got into a groove they took over,” Thunderwolves head coach Jon Kreiner said.
The Thunderwolves took a one-point deficit into the second quarter, but after the margin grew in the second and third frames, Lakehead was unable to mount a comeback. The Thunderwolves won the fourth frame 20-16, but it was too little too late.
“They did a great job of taking Leashja out of the game tonight,” Kreiner said.
Leashja Grant finished the game with 10 points, 10 rebounds, and 1 block in 28 minutes. She went 4-11 from the floor. Lakehead was led by senior guard Karissa Kajorinne, who dropped 21 points, dished out 5 assists, and picked up 2 steals in 35 minutes. Nikki Ylagan added 13 points with 3-9 shooting from deep, and Lily Gruber-Schulz added 10 points and 3 rebounds of her own.
“Windsor kept us off the offensive boards and took advantage of most opportunities they had tonight,” Kreiner said. The Lancers grabbed 34 rebounds to Lakehead’s 27.
The Thunderwolves travel to Hamilton next weekend to face the McMaster Marauders in their gym. Lakehead and McMaster are currently the top two teams in the OUA West, sharing identical 12-2 records.
“We need to get back to doing the little things,” Kreiner said, “and we need to learn from this game.”
