THUNDER BAY – SPORTS – Lakehead’s women’s basketball team added another win to their season on Friday night, taking down the Windsor Lancers by a score of 54-50 in their first home game of 2019. The win brings Lakehead to 12-1, and the win streak grows to 8.
“Tonight’s game against Windsor was a very physical, playoff-style game,” Thunderwolves head coach Jon Kreiner said. “We played pretty well most of the game but we struggled to get good looks on the offensive end and just couldn’t get the separation we needed.”
Lakehead won the first three quarters before weathering a Windsor comeback in the final frame, as the Lancers won the fourth quarter 22-15. The Thunderwolves were able to overcome a poor shooting night of 31.7% from the floor by holding Windsor to 30.4% shooting, including 5-34 from deep.
“We played pretty solid D,” Kreiner said, “but we struggled to rebound the ball, which led to easy putbacks and open threes, so we’ll need to correct that.”
Windsor out-rebounded Lakehead 40 to 36, led by Samantha Gucciardi’s 12 boards.
Lakehead was led by Leashja Grant’s 26 points, 11 rebounds, and 4 steals. Karissa Kajorinne added 10 points of her own, and five other Thunderwolves scored in single digits.
The loss puts Windsor at 7-6, but they still sit third in the OUA West.
The two teams will face off again Saturday night, with the rematching beginning at 6pm.
