THUNDER BAY – SPORTS – Two local divers represented Thunder Bay Diving Club over this past weekend at the Ontario Winter Provincial Championships in Etobicoke. It marked the first competition for area divers this season, with 68 athletes from 12 clubs across Ontario and Quebec.
Michael Doerr earned a gold medal in each of the three events he entered for 11 year-olds: 1m springboard; 3m springboard; and 5m platform, respectively. Doerr reached the 100% national point standard on 1m and 3m springboards, meaning he only requires one more score in both events to qualify for the Junior Development National Championships next July in Regina.
Abbey Meloche is competing in her second year of the 16-18 years age group. Meloche won bronze in the 1m springboard and placed 4th in the 3m springboard. In the Open Women 3m springboard, Meloche placed 9th.
“They both worked extremely hard and it is fantastic to see that their hard work and dedication has been rewarded with excellent results in the pool.”
Thunder Bay Diving Club now prepares for the Polar Bear Classic held in Winnipeg February 8-10. The team is expected to bring a much larger group to this event because it is inclusive to all member levels from National, Provincial to Novice Competition.
For those of you looking to see a little dive action without the long-distance travel, we have our very own informal but prize worthy recreational mini-meet happening at the Canada Games Complex on December 15th at 9:30 am. This is event is free and is sure to please. This is a chance to see divers show off the skills they have learned so far to family, friends and you!
The emphasis here is on participation and learning what a diving competition is all about. More information can be found at tbdc.ca
