THUNDER BAY – SPORTS – A 6’0 forward, Megan (Buckeye, AZ) attended Apache Junction High school and played for the Western New Mexico University Mustangs (NCAA DIV 2).

Looney was a team captain at Apache Junction where she was the teams leading scorer averaging 15 points per game.  Prior to that, she played at juggernaut St. Mary’s in Phoenix where she won two state championship rings as a freshman and sophomore including going 30-0 her freshman year. Her junior season, she posted a career-high 30 points, 12 rebounds and two steals against Saguaro. The season opener that year she tallied 15 points, 15 rebounds, four steals, three assists and a block against Alhambra. During her sophomore season, she was mentioned in USA Today following an 18 point, 7 rebound game versus Alhambra.
“I am very happy and excited that Megan has decided to join the Thunderwolves Family. Megan is a very experienced and knowledgeable forward that will instantly provide us with toughness, interior defence, rebounding and she has the ability to hit the outside shot. Megan is a very intelligent student-athlete who loves the game and will fit in very nicely with our team,” shares Coach Jon Kreiner
Megan will be graduating from Western New Mexico University (WNMU) with a Bachelors in Sociology with a double minor in Pre-Law and Psychology with an overall 3.8 GPA. Megan will be taking a Masters in Social Justice at Lakehead over the next two seasons. Megan played 3 years for the Mustangs where she was the teams leading rebounder and led the team in double-doubles in her sophomore year.
Megan Explains, “I chose Lakehead because it presented me the opportunity to further my education, and continue to improve my athletic abilities. The coaching staff at Lakehead has impeccable knowledge of the game which is backed by their stellar record, and the talented women they have recruited. Along with Coach Kreiner’s knowledge of the game, I was very impressed with how long he has been with this program. Having that kind of stability and dedication is exactly what I need in a coach. I cannot begin to express how blessed I am to have this opportunity. I am beyond excited to have a fresh start at LU, and begin playing with my amazing teammates.”
Megan would also like to acknowledge her family as a major factor in her decision. Her mom Marie, brothers Cameron and Bryson as well as her grandparents Ben and Geraldine Looney all played a key roll in her decision to commit to Lakehead University.
