Academy Fire Update – Woman Charged with Criminal Negligence Causing Death

THUNDER BAY – Charges have been laid in relation to the fire at Unit 6 in the Academy Housing Complex. Tracey Claudette Mawakeesic, 48-year-old of Thunder Bay appeared in court today after being charged in relation to the structural fire earlier this week that claimed the life of 30-year-old Kyle Malcolm Stoney and sent a 23-year-old female to the hospital where she remains in critical condition.

Police investigators spoke to witnesses and viewed video surveillance to determine that Mawakeesic was to be charged with Criminal Negligence Causing Death and Criminal Negligence Causing Bodily Harm. She was located at a Trillium Way residence just after 5:30 pm on October 16, 2018, and taken into custody without incident. She has been remanded into custody.

Police are awaiting the results of the post-mortem as well as the results of the Fire Marshall’s examination. This investigation is ongoing.

None of the charges have been proven in a court of law.
