KENORA – POLITICS – Bob Nault, on behalf of the Hon, Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development and Minister responsible for FedNor, announced an investment of $177,000 to enable Sioux Narrows-Nestor Falls the opportunity to hire a Community Development Officer (CDO) for a three-year period.
“These types of strategic economic investments are exactly what we need in the North in order to stimulate more economic growth and create opportunities in the North,” stated Nault. “Hiring an economic development officer will help the Township of Sioux Narrows-Nestor Falls diversify its economy to the benefit of residents and businesses alike.”
The funding is provided through the FedNor Community Investment Initiative for Northern Ontario (CIINO). The Community Development Officer will help implement the recommendations of the township’s 2017 Strategic Plan with the goal of creating a viable, sustainable local economy, attracting investment, and providing support for entrepreneurs.
The CDO will further develop partnership opportunities with the four neighbouring First Nations through the implementation of the joint “Lake of the Woods Parkway” economic development plan. Additionally, the CDO will help grow and expand existing businesses, as well as recruit new businesses and pursue new opportunities, especially those related to the New Gold – Rainy River gold mine.
“Not only will this help grow the economy of Sioux Narrows-Nestor Falls, it will also increase business investment, job creation, and open the doors to greater opportunities and collaboration among First Nations and other communities in the region,” concluded Nault.
Jerry O’Leary, Mayor of the Township of Sioux Narrows-Nestor Falls says, “We would like to acknowledge the Government of Canada’s support that will assist our community in charting a course toward success. Today’s announcement will allow us to hire a professional Community Development Officer to advance a number of priority projects that will help diversify the economy, stimulate growth and attract new private sector investment to the area.”
