Manslaughter Charges Upgraded in Marathon Death

MARATHON – OPP in Marathon have reported that charges in the assault that happened on July 31st has now resulted in Manslaughter charges against a Marathon resident.

On July 31, 2018, at approximately 3:00 p.m., members of the Marathon Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) responded to a report of an unconscious male at a residence on Stevens Avenue in Marathon. Officers attended and confirmed that a 20-year-old male from Marathon was receiving medical attention from Superior North Emergency Medical Services. He was subsequently flown to Thunder Bay for further medical assistance.

The victim, identified as 20-year-old Wade Hendry-Lee OTIQUAM-JOY from Marathon, passed away in hospital on August 1, 2018.

Marathon resident Sheldon FINLAYSON, 45-years-old, was arrested and charged with Aggravated Assault contrary to section 268 of the Criminal Code and appeared at the Ontario Court of Justice in Marathon August 1, 2018.

FINLAYSON remained in custody and was arrested on August 26, 2018, and charged with Manslaughter contrary to Section 236 of the Criminal Code.

Members of the OPP North West Region Crime Unit and Forensic Identification Services under the direction of Detective Inspector Darryl Sigouin of the OPP Criminal Investigation Branch (CIB) continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the death.
