FORT FRANCES – WEATHER – Environment Canada has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Watch for Fort Frances, Rainy River, and region.

Severe thunderstorm watch in effect for:

  • Fort Frances – Emo – Rainy River
  • Seine River Village – Mine Centre

Risk of severe thunderstorms toward midnight.

An area of thunderstorms is expected to develop over the Dakotas and Minnesota this evening and then track northeastward into the regions toward midnight.

Some of these could storms could contain locally damaging winds, hail, and torrential downpours.

There will also the risk for a tornado.

Environment Canada will monitor this situation closely.

Strong wind gusts can toss loose objects, damage weak buildings, break branches off trees and overturn large vehicles. Lightning kills and injures Canadians every year. Remember, when thunder roars, go indoors!

Severe thunderstorm watches are issued when atmospheric conditions are favourable for the development of thunderstorms that could produce one or more of the following: large hail, damaging winds, torrential rainfall.

The Office of the Fire Marshal and Emergency Management recommends that you take cover immediately if threatening weather approaches.
