OPP Report on Sunday’s Serious Accident Near Wawa

HIGHWAY 17 WAS CLOSED DUE TO FATAL COLLISION

(WAWA, ON) – On Sunday, August 19, 2018, at approximately 10:19 p.m., members of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), Superior East (Wawa) Detachment, responded to a fatal motor vehicle collision on Highway 17 approximately 15 kilometres south of Wawa in Lendrum Township, Ontario.

The Ontario Provincial Police report that their preliminary investigation has revealed that a southbound vehicle struck a moose then crossed into the northbound lane colliding with a northbound vehicle. The northbound vehicle carried five familial occupants, all of which were transported to hospital with serious injuries. Two of the five occupants have since passed away. Two occupants in the southbound vehicle were pronounced deceased at the scene, while the other two occupants were also transported to hospital with serious injuries.

Victims Identified-Investigation Ongoing

The deceased occupants of the southbound vehicle have been identified as Fatos METKO (45) and Fioralb METKO (14) both of Calgary, Alberta. The deceased occupants of the northbound vehicle have been identified as Cynthia CARAOA (51) and Anika CARAOA (9) both of Winnipeg, Manitoba.

This investigation remains ongoing under the direction of Detective Inspector Rob Hagerman of the Criminal Investigation Branch (CIB) of the OPP. Assisting with the investigation are members of the OPP’s Superior East and Sault Ste. Marie Detachment Crime Units along with the OPP’s Technical Collision Investigation (TCI) Team. Algoma Emergency Medical Services (EMS) and the Wawa Volunteer Fire Department assisted at the scene.
