Finn Way wins bid to build Fire Management HeadquartersCOOK COUNTY – Following updates on the Cook County Highway Department’s major 2018 projects.

CSAH 17
Following the project’s July bid opening, Mineral Center Road and Old Hwy. 61 (a.k.a. CSAH 17) improvements in Grand Portage will begin in August. Northland Constructors of Duluth will reclaim the old blacktop and replace 78 culverts along 10 miles of CSAH 17. Additionally, construction crews need to replace 28,000 yards of soils as part of this reconstruction project.

Travelers should expect traffic delays along CSAH 17 until November.  Cook County plans to pause the project to accommodate Rendezvous Days traffic.  A subsequent paving plan for the Mineral Center Road segment of this project is expected to bid in 2019.

Lutsen Bridge
S&R Construction continues to build the Highway 5 bridge over the ski hill at Lutsen.  The pedestrian bridge remains open to the gondola, Papa Charlie’s, and the Superior Hiking Trail during construction. Cook County and Lutsen Mountains Corporation expect the new bridge to open to traffic in August. Minor traffic impacts for bridge painting, lighting installation, and road striping are expected in September.

Cook County thanks travelers, residents, and local businesses for their patience and attention to work zone safety during the construction season.  This year’s $5.2 million in road and bridge improvements are supported by Cook County’s Transportation Sales Tax.
