Suspect Arrested in Wikwemikong Nursing Home Death Investigation

WIKWEMIKONG, ON – On August 26, 2017, members of the Wikwemikong Tribal Police Service responded to the Wikwemikong Nursing Home regarding an incident that occurred during the evening of August 25, 2017. A resident from the nursing home was taken to hospital to be treated for his injuries. This resident, Robert Jim STILL, 85-years-old, from Little Current, Ontario subsequently died on August 30, 2017.

On June 8, 2018, Wikwemikong Tribal Police Service arrested Joseph Mark EDWARDS, 64-years-old, from Wikwemikong, Ontario. He has been charged with the following offences:

  • Assault, contrary to Section 266 of the Criminal Code (CC), and,
  • Aggravated assault, contrary to Section 268 of the CC.

The accused is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Gore Bay on June 15, 2018.

The Wikwemikong Tribal Police Service is continuing their investigation under the direction of Detective Inspector Mark Zulinski of the OPP Criminal Investigation Branch (CIB) with the assistance of the Office of the Chief Coroner – Ontario Forensic Pathology Service (OCC-OFPS) in Sudbury.
