Compost is available to all residents at no charge at the Solid Waste and Recycling Facility while quantities last, weather permitting. Access to the compost pick-up area is located east of the old landfill entrance on John Street Road. Hours of operation are Monday through Friday from 8:30 am to 5 pm, and Saturday from 9 am to 4 pm.

“We’re happy to again offer free compost to all residents,” said Jason Sherband, Manager – Solid Waste & Recycling Services. “Leaf and yard waste that’s picked up during our curbside collection programs is blended with organic waste and is ideal for use in landscaping, flower beds and lawns. It’s not suitable for vegetable gardens.”

Residents bringing garbage, recycling and/or hazardous household waste are reminded to dispose of these items at the Solid Waste and Recycling Facility on Mapleward Road first before visiting the special compost pick-up area. Residents are also advised to bring a shovel and some bags or containers to carry compost home. Quantities are limited to a maximum of one half-ton load per resident. The price of a litre of gas is reported at $1.499 in Terrace Bay. Honestly put, at these prices, the costs of many necessities are going to go up too. Fuel prices across the western parts of Ontario range from $1.389 in Dryden, to $1.399 at the Husky on Chipman Street in Kenora,  In Thunder Bay, the lowest price in the city is $1.356 at the Macs on Hodder Avenue. Out on the Fort William First Nation, gas prices are at $1.249 at THP.
