Mississauga, ON -The Director of the Special Investigations Unit, Tony Loparco, has terminated an investigation into an interaction earlier this month at a jail in Kenora.
In the evening hours of May 14, 2018, Ontario Provincial Police officers were performing prisoner transport duties from the courthouse in Kenora to the Kenora District Jail. Once at the jail, there was an interaction between an officer and one of the individuals being transported, a 21-year-old woman. As a result of that interaction, the woman was examined by a medical professional.
Director Loparco said, “The medical evidence establishes the woman did not sustain a serious injury. Accordingly, I have terminated the investigation into this incident.”
The SIU is an arm’s length agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault. Under the Police Services Act, the Director of the SIU must
- consider whether an officer has committed a criminal offence in connection with the incident under investigation
- depending on the evidence, lay a criminal charge against the officer if appropriate or close the file without any charges being laid
- report the results of any investigations to the Attorney General.
