THUNDER BAY – Day STARTER – Good Morning Northwestern Ontario. Its back to work for most of us, as the long weekend ended.  While Saturday was rainy, Sunday and Monday more than made up for it with sunny skies and warm temperatures. The sunny conditions will continue into the week. For Thunder Bay this fine day, we will have sunny skies. Winds will become northwest 20 km/h this afternoon. The high today will be 27. Expect a UV index of 7 or high.

Those conditions are making the woodlands and the cities and towns tinder dry and the outdoor fire ban and for Thunder Bay fireworks ban is still in effect.

Special air quality statement in effect for:

  • Pikangikum – Poplar Hill – MacDowell

Elevated pollution levels are expected or occurring.

Possible high levels of air pollution due to smoke from forest fires are expected today. Smoke plumes moving over Northwestern Ontario from a forest fire west of Poplar Hill near the Manitoba border may likely affect Poplar Hill, MacDowell, and possibly Pikangikum today and possibly into Wednesday. Air quality may deteriorate if the smoke descends to ground level.

Individuals may experience symptoms such as increased coughing, throat irritation, headaches or shortness of breath. Children, seniors, and those with cardiovascular or lung disease, such as asthma, are especially at risk.

National Public Works Week

Residents are invited to celebrate National Public Works Week at a free open house that will highlight and celebrate the work public servants do to keep our city running.

The open house for residents will take place on Saturday, May 26, from 11 am – 2 pm at the Mountdale Public Works Yard, 410 Mountdale Ave. The open house will feature:

  • Vehicle displays of a garbage truck, snow plow, tree truck, excavator, front-end loader, the new Python 5000, and more!
  • Hotdogs and hamburgers
  • Music
  • Kids activities
  • Chances to win great prizes

National Public Works Week takes place May 20 – 26, 2018, and is recognized across North America as an opportunity to educate residents about public works and celebrate the work these professionals provide.

“Public works professionals work hard to provide and maintain essential public services. They are often the hidden heroes of winter storm and rainfall events, and they work hard behind the scenes to deliver high-quality drinking water, to name a few,” said Kerri Marshall, General Manager – Infrastructure & Operations. “Our community depends on our public works professionals, who are always there and always ready.”

National Public Works Week is a great way to showcase the work these individuals do for our community as well as thank them for their dedication.  Please join us in recognizing their work.
