THUNDER BAY – DAYSTARTER – Happy Saturday Northwestern Ontario. It is the Family Day weekend. Weather wise, for Thunder Bay the flurries will be ending in the morning then mainly cloudy with a 40 percent chance of flurries. Winds becoming west 20 km/h gusting to 40 early in the afternoon. High minus 5. For many in the city, a trip to Duluth is in their weekend plans. Drive carefully.
The Ontario Provincial Police are asking that you drive safe this weekend. With the Family Day long weekend upon us, the Sudbury Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) expects to see many eager Ontarians take to the roads, trails, and lakes. The long weekend initiative begins on Friday, February 16 and will end Monday, February 19, 2018. The focus during this holiday weekend is the “Big Four”, which includes impaired driving, lack of occupant restraint use, aggressive driving and distracted driving.
All motorists, snowmobilers and off-road vehicle users should take charge of their own safety and ensure the safety of passengers and anyone else whose lives they would jeopardize due to unsafe or dangerous driving behaviour. Remember to take a few minutes prior to departure to be fully prepared, wear a helmet, be prepared for the weather and don’t drink and drive while impaired.
The OPP is reminding motorists to be mindful about Ontario’s Move Over law that requires drivers to slow down and move over when passing an emergency vehicle (ambulance/fire/police) on the shoulder of the road. It is better to operate a motor vehicle, snowmobile or off-road vehicle within the law, than dealing with the life-changing consequences that begin to unfold the second a person makes a poor decision behind the wheel and lives are senselessly brought to a tragic end.
“If you plan on operating a motor vehicle, a snowmobile or an off-road vehicle this weekend, remember that your safety and the safety of others is your responsibility. Expect higher volumes of traffic, obey the laws and drive according to the conditions. Be a distracted free driver and Arrive Alive” says Staff Sgt. Esposto.
