Sioux Lookout OPP Lay Charges Following Stabbing

SIOUX LOOKOUT – The Sioux Lookout Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) has charged a Sioux Lookout resident following an incident where a male was stabbed.

On December 31, 2017, at approximately 8:30 am, the Sioux Lookout OPP was dispatched to a report of a male who sustained stab wounds. The male was transported to the hospital in critical condition where he received treatment for his injuries.

The OPP’s Northwest Region Emergency Response Team, Canine Unit, Crime Unit and members of the Sioux Lookout Detachment assisted in the apprehension of the accused.

As a result of the incident, Lanny MEKANAK (28-years-old) was charged with:

  • Aggravated Assault contrary to section 268 of the Criminal Code
  • Possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose contrary to section 88 of the Criminal Code
  • Failing to comply with his recognizance contrary to section 145(3) of the Criminal Code
  • Breach of probation contrary to section 733.1(1) of the Criminal Code

The accused was held in custody and is scheduled to appear in court next on January 2, 2018.
