Fort Lauderdale, FL – SPORTS – The Lakehead women’s basketball team edged Broward College, 88-86, in a close match up today in Florida during exhibition play.
The Thunderwolves trailed by 1 after the first quarter (21-20) but managed to turn it around to lead 49-40 at the half. The game continued to remain close as Lakehead found themselves down 70-69 after three quarters.
At the end of the fourth, the Thunderwolves called a timeout with 18 seconds left and drew up a play that led to Rachel Webber driving and kicking to Lily Gruber-Schulz for the game-winning shot.
“Today’s game was much different than yesterdays. It was an up-tempo, high scoring game and the level of skill was on full display. Both teams pushed the ball well in transition and made their open shots. Leashja had another monster game but our scoring was much more balanced today. We complete this trip with a practice tomorrow and some team building before we head back home to play Guelph in our first conference games of 2018,” said Coach Jon Kreiner after the game.
Leashja Grant led the Wolves again with 34 points, 12 rebounds while Lily Gruber-Schulz put up 13. Jerika Baldin scored 9 with 8 assists and Tiffany Reynolds scored 9 points, 5 rebound and 3 steals. Rachel Webber played great defence in the second half and contributed with 4 steals, 4 rebounds, and 4 assists.
Overall, the Thunderwolves had 24 team assists to 14 turnovers.
The OUA regular season starts up again on January 5th and 6th, 2018 in the Thunderdome in a double header against Guelph.
