THUNDER BAY – NEWS – On Wednesday, December 13, 2017, at approximately 11:00 p.m. patrol officers were dispatched to the area of Highway 61 and Mount Forest Boulevard to investigate a report of a loud explosion that shook the houses in the vicinity.
Officers searched the area traveling northbound on Highway 61 and observed a large round hole in the snow on the side of the road approximately two and a half feet around. In the center of the hole was a pile of what appeared to be rock-like substance. Officers checked the area around the hole in the snow. There were no footprints and no vehicle tire tracks.
The TBPS has been in contact with Lakehead University and they will be having a Professor Aemeritus from the Geology Department examining the area. It is believed this was a meteor from the Geminid Meteor Shower which peaked December 13 and morning of December 14, 2017.
Lakehead University is seeking assistance from the person or persons who may have gathered the material from the hole.
