Toronto, ON – The Lakehead women’s basketball team (6-3) fell to the Toronto Varsity Blues (4-6) tonight 72-64 at the Goldring Centre for High-Performance Sport.

The Thunderwolves led 22-19 after the first quarter but the Blues stayed in the game taking back the lead going into the half up 34-32.

The third quarter was a back-and-forth battle that finished with the Blues still leading, 53-49, over the Thunderwolves.

Toronto’s Keyira Parkes sealed the victory for Toronto, draining seven points in the first five minutes of the fourth to put Toronto up 60-55. Lakehead attempted to rally but the Blues held them off to earn their fourth win of the season.

Parkes led all players with 23 points, with 13 coming in the fourth quarter.

“Full credit to coach Belanger for getting her team more prepared and ready to play tonight. We looked flat, the lacked energy we normally have and Toronto took full advantage of that on both ends of the floor. We struggled to contain Toronto’s guards and did not move the ball on offense. 26 fouls for a team that averages 14 tells the tale,” says Coach Jon Kreiner.

Leashja Grant finished the night with 22 points and collected her most rebounds to date with 23 total. Bridget O’Reilly had 14 points with 4 threes.

The Thunderwolves take on the Ryerson Rams tomorrow at 6 pm in their last game of 2017 before heading into the break.
