THUNDER BAY – The 20-year-old male who was rescued from the Neebing/McIntyre Floodway last night remains in hospital in stable condition. The man is expected to make a full recovery.
Investigators spoke to the male this morning regarding last night’s incident. They have been able to establish that alcohol was a factor in this incident. Witnesses have indicated that the male appeared to be alone at the time of the incident.
The quick action by a member of the public who called 911 to report a young man in the water resulted in a rapid response by emergency responders who were on scene within three minutes.
Uniform patrol officers entered the water and pulled the unconscious male to shore with the assistance of fire personnel. Officers began CPR until EMS paramedics could transport him to hospital. Other uniform patrol officers ensured a safe route to the hospital by blocking key intersections.
Thunder Bay Police continue to have directed patrols along the city’s waterways.
Since the inception of these patrols in December 2016, there have been approximately 50 incidents where police interventions have saved lives.
We would like to remind the public that calling 911 to report anyone in danger is the right thing to do and can make the difference between life and death.
