THUNDER BAY – UPDATED – On Friday, August 25, 2017 at approximately 2:45 pm, officers from the Thunder Bay Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), Superior North Emergency Medical Service (EMS), and Upsala Fire responded to a three vehicle collision on Highway 17 approximately 10 kilometers east of Upsala.
Investigation has determined that a grey 4-door automobile travelling westbound on Highway 17 attempting to pass a westbound tractor/trailer unit near the crest of a hill struck the trailer, crossed over the eastbound lane striking the guard rails on the eastbound side, then collided with an eastbound white SUV.
The female driver of the grey 4-door automobile and male driver of the white SUV were injured and transported to hospital by EMS.
The passenger of the grey car, a 26 years of age man from Fredericton, New Brunswick was pronounced dead at the scene.
The female driver of the grey 4-door automobile was charged with Careless Driving contrary to section 130 of the Highway Traffic Act.
The OPP Highway Safety Division (HSD) and the OPP Technical Traffic Collision Investigators (TTCI) attended the scene to assist with the investigation.
The highway was closed for approximately 7 ½ hours while the investigation was conducted.
Earlier version of this report had the vehicles reversed. Speaking with the OPP that correction in their original media release has now been made.
