Arrest Made in South Core Arson Fires

THUNDER BAY – Thunder Bay Police have made an arrest in a series of arson incidents in the south core of the city.

Police responded to a vehicle fire near Arthur Street and Syndicate Avenue at 4:05AM EDT on June 16, 2017. Officers began checking for a male suspect seen leaving the area. At 4:10AM EDT a female on May Street alerted those officers of a fire she just noticed at a residence in the 200 block of South May Street.

Officers requested Thunder Bay Fire Rescue attend the fire and then proceeded to that residence and observed the attached garage in flames.

Police began to evacuate three individuals who were in the building, and started efforts to extinguish the fire.

Thunder Bay Fire Rescue arrived and were able to fully extinguish the flames.

Meanwhile at 4:20AM EDT other patrol officers located a male walking on Simpson Street who matched the description of the individual who was seen leaving the vehicle fire at 04:05AM EDT.

This male was in possession of a container with gas in it.

The suspect was arrested and escorted to the Balmoral Police Station.

A thirty-three-year-old Thunder Bay man has been charged with two counts of Arson as well as Possession of Incendiary Material and two charges Breach of Recognizance.

He will appear in court Saturday morning. Until a suspect has been arraigned before the court, that individual’s name is not released to the public.
