Drowning Near Upsala Under OPP Investigation

THUNDER BAY – The Thunder Bay Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police are investigating a drowning incident.

OPP report that on Friday, June 2, 2017, at approximately 2:09PM EDT, officers from the Thunder Bay Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), and the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry (MNRF) were advised of a possible drowning that occurred at Sparkling Lake in the Upsala area.

On May 30, 2017, two males were camping/fishing on Breeze Point Island when they observed their boat floating away. A 57-year-old male from Onalaska, Wisconsin, USA, attempted to retrieve the boat and then suddenly stopped swimming, going limp in the water.

The male who remained on the Island was stranded until he was able to flag down other boaters for assistance on Friday, June 2nd, 2017.

A post-mortem examination is scheduled to be conducted in Kenora on Monday, June 5, 2017.

The investigation is continuing.
