Stout’s OT winner sends Dryden past Georgetown in Dudley-Hewitt Cup opener
TRENTON, Ont. – An Eric Stout goal 5:50 into overtime lifted the Dryden GM Ice Dogs (SIJHL) to a dramatic 5-4 victory over the Georgetown Raiders (OJHL) in Game 1 of the Dudley-Hewitt Cup Central Canadian Jr. A Championship Tuesday afternoon in Trenton, Ont.
Georgetown would open the scoring 12:18 into the contest, taking advantage of a neutral-zone pinch that allowed the Raiders to break in on a two-on-one that resulted in OJHL MVP Jack Jacome getting in alone on top of Dryden starter Patrick Zubick where he made a number of quick dekes before stuffing the puck past the outstretched pad of the GM Ice Dogs’ netminder.
Jacome struck again a minute and a half later as he worked his way free then took a feed from behind the net and snapped one high over the shoulder of Zubick.
The Raiders carried the pace of play throughout the initial stanza holding a significant 20-6 edge in shots on goal in the stanza.
An early man advantage opportunity in the second session allowed Dryden to get on the board as Jacen Bracko snapped one from the left point that clipped off a Raiders defender then skipped off the ice and hopped over the pad of Georgetown goaltender Nicholas Latinovich to notch the initial tally for the SIJHL champions.
Another fortuitous bounce allowed the GM Ice Dogs to level the proceedings near the midway mark of the stanza as a Woody Galbraith dump in kicked off the end boards with the puck rolling back in front where a waiting Trey Palermo jammed in the equalizer past an unsuspecting Latinovich.
A free-wheeling end of the period saw both sides trades quality chances with Dryden hitting the post on a chance while Georgetown came right back seconds later on a breakaway only to miss the net before the frame came to a close.
The Raiders’ standout Jacome helped put is club back in front two minutes into the third after corralling a loose puck near centre ice whey he broke in and slid a cross-crease pass to an unmarked Matt McJannet, who was left with a tap in.
Countering once more, Dryden drew level yet again with their second power play effort of the day as SIJHL MVP Braeden Allkins fired a chance that Latinovich could not control allowing Nic Noseworthy to back hand one in from close range at 5:54.
After having a number of opportunities that created quality chances, Georgetown’s highly-skilled power connected play late in a man advantage at Ryan Takamatsu neatly redirected a Jacob Payette left point effort past Zubick.
Jacome also drew an assist on the play for his four point of the day.
The resilient GM Ice Dogs came back once more with Allkins collecting his second helper of the day as his pass found a hard-charging Derek McPhail, who chipped in the tying tally with 3:25 left in regulation.
Heading to extra time and with the club’s going four skaters aside it was Dryden that completed the comeback as they broke out of their own zone after a face-off with Colton Sandboe firing a shot and Stout collecting the big rebound where the SIJHL Rookie of the Year made no mistake burying the game-winner into the open side to end it.
With the GM Ice Dogs getting outshot 49-29 in the contest, it was no surprise that Dryden netminder Zubick was named his team’s player of the game. Takamatsu picked up the accolades for the Raiders.
Dryden returns to the ice Wednesday afternoon as they take of the champions of the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League, the Powassan Voodoos, at 2:30 p.m. back in Trenton while Georgetown meets fellow OJHL-side and tournament host Trenton Golden Hawks at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.
Powassan and Trenton play Game 2 Tuesday evening at 7:30 p.m.
